Your day

Morning – Óbidos. About an hour north of Lisbon, we explore the walled village of Óbidos: cobbled streets, white houses with blue and yellow trims, and a taste of ginjinha in a chocolate cup.

Late morning – Peniche. We continue to the coast at Peniche. Visit the fortress, a former political prison under the dictatorship that now houses the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom. Then drive out to Cabo Carvoeiro, where sea-carved cliffs face the Berlengas islands.

Lunch. Peniche is one of Portugal’s great fishing ports, so it’s a perfect place for grilled fish or a seafood lunch.

Afternoon – Nazaré. We finish in Nazaré. From the cliffs of Sítio and the lighthouse fort, look over Praia do Norte, home of the world’s biggest surfed waves, then stroll the fishing town and its long beach.

Return. Back to Lisbon in the early evening.

Good to know

  • Big-wave season in Nazaré runs roughly from October to March.
  • Coastal viewpoints are windy. Bring a light jacket.
  • The order of stops can be adapted to the weather and surf forecast.
