10-Day Portugal Itinerary for Families: Porto, the Douro and the Algarve

A day-by-day plan for a 10-day private family trip through Portugal, from Porto and the Douro Valley to the Algarve and Sintra, with what it costs, how long the drives are and practical tips for American families.

The short answer: ten days is the right length to see Portugal properly with a family. The route below starts in Porto, follows the Douro Valley and central Portugal south to the Algarve’s sea caves, and finishes in Lisbon, with one private driver-guide for the whole trip.

You fly into Porto and home from Lisbon, nobody has to drive, and the longest day on the road is broken up with stops. It is based on our From Algarve to Porto journey, and the 10-day version starts from €4,030 (about US$4,500) for two travellers. Families are quoted for their group size and dates.

At a glance

  • Route: Porto → Douro Valley → Coimbra → Fátima, Batalha and Óbidos → the Algarve → Évora → Sintra and Cascais → Lisbon.
  • Best for: families with children or teenagers, and multi-generational groups travelling with grandparents.
  • Group size: 2 to 7 travellers in one private vehicle, so most families fit together (if the group is bigger than 7 we can have another van or mini bus).
  • Included: your own local guide-driver for the whole journey, private transport with Wi-Fi and bottled water, insurance, taxes and the driver’s expenses, and a boat trip to the Benagil sea cave (weather permitting).
  • Child seats: available for younger children. Tell us their ages when you book.
  • Not included: flights, hotels, meals and monument tickets (except the ones included on the itinerary). We can recommend family-friendly hotels in each region.

Why a private driver-guide works so well for families

Portugal is a small country, but a road trip with children still means foreign road signs, narrow old-town streets, tolls and parking. Public transportation doesn’t reach the Douro’s vineyards, Sagres or the Benagil coast, among other places.

With a private driver-guide, your luggage stays in the vehicle, everyone can nap between stops, and the day bends around your family: a longer lunch, an extra swim, or an early night after a long flight. For grandparents, it means less walking and no hauling bags through stations. For teenagers, it means a local who answers the questions they actually ask.

Also you will have a local Portuguese that will be always with you, sharing the culture, the habits and showing you the other side of Portugal beyond the tourist attractions. It’s like you have your own Portuguese friend and not only your driver/guide.

The 10-day itinerary, day by day(suggestion)

Day 1 – Arrive in Porto

Settle into your hotel and take an easy first evening along the Ribeira riverfront. After an overnight flight from the US, a gentle first day is the best cure for jet lag.

Day 2 – Porto and Gaia

São Bento station and its blue-and-white tile panels, the Cathedral, and Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world. Cross the river to Vila Nova de Gaia for a port wine cellar visit and tasting for the adults.

Day 3 – The Douro Valley

About 2 hours from Porto, the terraced vineyards of the Douro are one of Portugal’s most spectacular landscapes. Visit a family wine estate and have lunch overlooking the river.

Day 4 – Coimbra

About 1.5 hours south of Porto, Coimbra is Portugal’s old university city. Children love the baroque Joanina Library, where a colony of small bats still protects the old books from insects at night.

Day 5 – Fátima, Batalha and Óbidos

Three very different stops in one day: the Sanctuary of Fátima, the Gothic Monastery of Batalha, and Óbidos, a medieval village you can walk around on top of its walls.

Day 6 – South to the Algarve

The longest drive of the trip, about 3.5 to 4 hours, broken up with stops along the way. Arrive on the coast in time for an easy evening by the sea.

Day 7 – Benagil, Lagos and Sagres

The highlight for most teenagers: a boat trip into the famous Benagil sea cave (included, weather and sea conditions permitting), the rock arches of Ponta da Piedade, the old town of Lagos, and the cliffs of Sagres at the south-western tip of Europe.

Day 8 – Évora and the Alentejo

About 3 hours north, UNESCO-listed Évora has a Roman temple, a cathedral you can climb, and the Chapel of Bones, a memorable stop for older children. The adults can enjoy an Alentejo wine tasting.

Day 9 – Sintra and Cascais

The colourful Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, where you can walk down the spiral Initiation Well. Then Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, and the seaside town of Cascais.

Day 10 – Transfer to Lisbon airport

Your guide-driver takes you to Lisbon airport for your flight home. If you’d like time to explore Lisbon itself, with Belém’s monastery and tower, a pastel de nata, and the old Alfama quarter, add an extra day at the end or start the trip in Lisbon.

Shorter or longer?

  • 8 days: skip Coimbra and see Fátima, Batalha and Óbidos in one focused day.
  • 12 days: add a second Algarve day for beach time, and a night at a wine estate in the Douro.
  • Starting in Lisbon: the trip can also start in Lisbon instead of Porto. It always finishes in Lisbon.

What does a 10-day private family trip cost?

This 10-day journey starts from €4,030 (about US$4,500) for two travellers, covering your private guide-driver and private transport. The final price depends on how many of you are travelling, so we quote every family for their exact group and dates. Hotels, meals, flights and monument tickets are not included (beside de ones already included in the itinerary).

Practical tips for American families

  • Flights: Lisbon has direct flights from several US cities. Porto has fewer, often seasonal. Flying into Porto and home from Lisbon (an “open-jaw” ticket) avoids doubling back, and this itinerary is designed around it.
  • Jet lag: Portugal is 5 hours ahead of US Eastern time and 8 hours ahead of Pacific time. Keep day 1 light and save the big sights for day 2.
  • Best time to go: May, June, September and early October are warm without the peak-summer crowds. July and August are busiest and hot inland, but best for swimming in the Algarve. See our month-by-month guide.
  • Hotels: ask for family rooms or connecting rooms early, especially in Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve in summer.
  • Money: Portugal uses the euro and cards are widely accepted. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Around 5 to 10% is generous.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days enough to see Portugal with kids?

Yes. Ten days covers Porto, the Douro, central Portugal, the Algarve, Évora and Sintra at a pace that leaves room for meals, pools and leisure time. With fewer days, we recommend dropping a region rather than rushing.

Do you provide child seats?

Yes, we have child seats for younger children. Just tell us your children’s ages when you book, so the right seats are ready in the vehicle.

Can we fly into Porto and out of Lisbon?

Yes. This itinerary is designed for exactly that, and it can also run in reverse order starting in Lisbon.

How many people fit in one vehicle?

Up to 7 travellers, plus your guide-driver, so most families and small multi-generational groups travel together. If the group is bigger than 7 we can have another van or mini bus.vc

Is a private tour worth it compared with renting a car?

For families, usually yes: no navigating, parking or tolls, no luggage in train stations, and a local guide who knows where to eat and when to arrive before the crowds. See private tours vs. large group tours for a fuller comparison.
