Your day
Morning – Belém. We start in Belém, where Portugal’s Age of Discovery began. See the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the Monument to the Discoveries. Then taste the original pastel de Belém, still made to a secret recipe next door to the monastery.
Midday – Baixa and Chiado. Back in the centre, we walk the grand squares of Baixa, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, from Praça do Comércio to Rossio. We continue up to Chiado, Lisbon’s historic literary quarter.
Lunch. A traditional Lisbon lunch in a local restaurant.
Afternoon – Alfama and the viewpoints. We explore Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhood and the home of fado, with its narrow lanes, tiled facades and the Cathedral. We finish at the city’s best miradouros, such as Santa Luzia and Senhora do Monte, for views across the rooftops to the river.
Return. Drop-off at your hotel in the late afternoon.
